Walk, take the bus, or drive the family car! We are taking a Road trip to Alabama!
Bristol Village participated in the 2016 Senior Olympics State qualifier Games held in Westerville, OH. To compete at the National Level, athletes must qualify in their chosen event at these state games.
Below is a brief history of the Ohio Senior Olympic Games:
- Ohio joined the National Senior Olympics in 1979. Over the years, the games have increased and changed, but the purpose remains the same: to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity for Ohioans ages 50 and over, and to provide top quality athletic competition.
- Regional games are held each year at approved sites around the state. Most regional games offer at least some of the events from the scheduled events of the National Senior Olympic Games in addition to favorite regional events.
Bristol Village participated in the following events:
- Pickle-ball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Golf, Bowling, Race Walk, and Swimming.
Since my age is, hmm, slightly over 50, I decided to participate with our Bristol Village delegation. Now I have to choose an event…no, I don’t sprint. Nor do I jump over 2 feet in the air. I decided to scan the list of events and down at the bottom was my favorite sport, badminton. (I was dynamite in college, crushing my opponents with slams…could I do that again?)
I am extremely grateful we did not videotape our first practice. Every birdie that was hit over the net seemed to have traveled through the black hole of my racquet. A miss every time! Needless to say, with only 5 practices under our belts, our performance was a humbling experience never to be talked about again.
Seventeen of us traveled to the state games last June with hopes of qualifying for the Nationals. We will be represented by five or six Bristol Village participants who plan to attend the Senior National Games in Alabama.
We all want to thank Betsy Hall, Senior Olympic Organizer at Bristol Village, for her enending encouragement and lifelong passion that she graciously passes along to anyone who chooses to journey in her path!
Did you ever think of participating in the Senior Olympics? Join the discussion and let me know what you think? What about next year…I have another badminton racquet!
I am…a truly humbled Boomer Explorer.
