Why is everyone I know tearing their hair out? Too much stuff: overflowing closets, drawers, garages…we all need to downsize, but how to begin?
A cluttered home is the single most used excuse for not be able to move by people wishing to go to smaller quarters or to a retirement community. This may be a time to reflect, regroup, and organize our lives so that we can age with the least amount of stress for ourselves and our families. Looking at a house full of stuff is daunting indeed — we don’t know where to begin, so we just don’t!
Our children don’t want our belongings, and neither do the grandchildren. They have no desire for the lovely crystal glasses or the gold-rimmed dishes that should not go into the dishwasher. Don’t feel rejected; it is a different time with a different lifestyle, a more casual one.
We must start downsizing while still healthy enough to do it, or it will be done for us or without us.
Why is this so difficult?
As Boomers approach retirement, they are faced with having to decide whether or not to downsize. Living in a large home and having to care for the yard, maintenance and cleaning can be overwhelming at times. When looking at options, Boomers can find a couple of choices to consider. They could move into an town house or condo, or into a retirement village. Both of these options will give Boomers the freedom to enjoy life after retirement without having to stress over the maintenance of a home. Before Boomers can even begin to move, they have to clear out things or de-clutter. This can be a difficult chore for some.
So how do we downsize?
Call it the great American sell-off…
And the winner is…Yard Sale!
I will say from the start that there is a great deal of work involved when preparing to have a yard sale to begin the downsizing journey. While living in Florida, we were allowed only two yard sales per year with a permit. That might seem too many for some, but we had a great deal of “stuff” to unload before we moved.
For us, this process went on for 5 years prior to the move. We had fun…
…and speaking of having fun, Bristol Village is having their annual Memorial Day Weekend Community Yard Sale on Saturday, May 27.
Having a yard sale is just one suggestion for downsizing. Maybe you would prefer to pay someone to have an estate sale. Just make it yours! The process is letting go…I can guarantee you will feel a giant weight lifted off your shoulders when you complete your downsizing process!
