“A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam,
And for a brief moment, its glory and beauty belong to our world…
But then it flies again, and though we wish it could have stayed…
We feel lucky to have seen it.”
Nature teaches us many lessons. And those little lessons are essentially our experiences. There are so many things we can learn from nature, as we will learn in this special blog series: Inspire…Strive…Passion. Our journey begins…
As I started to write this blog post, I asked myself the same questions I would be asking you, “What inspires you in your journey? Are you passionate about what you are doing and where you are going in your journey?
I really struggled quite a while with these questions. My life in the beginning of my career was filled with moments of excitement for achieving and moving ahead in a male dominated field. This excitement was unfortunately not in line with inspiration or passion.
Looking back sometimes is not an easy task. I had a great career, but I was missing the love of the work, the passion and inspiration for writing. I am only sharing this because I want you to understand that the journey you are taking can begin at any time or point in your life. There is no time limit.
So, with that in mind, I would like to share something that inspires me in my journey today…
The Special Olympics…
In Special Olympics, the power and joy of sport, shifts focus to what the athletes CAN do, not what they can’t. Attention to disabilities fades away. Instead, we see the athletes’ talents and abilities — and applaud them for all that they can do. And they are doing a lot — from gymnastics to soccer to open-water swimming. With the 30-plus Olympic-style sports, they offer adults and children with intellectual disabilities many ways to be involved in their communities, many ways to show who they really are.
Bravery is a core word in the Special Olympics movement, embedded in its athletes’ oath, which concludes: “If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Brave these athletes have to be, to rise in societies that tear them down.
There is a paradox within the Special Olympics — the organization puts a heavy emphasis on inspiration and joy. It lays that part on thick; it is hard to think of a happier bunch of people. But its message resonates so powerfully because of the pain it is working to erase.
The athletes of the Special Olympics World Games have overcome countless obstacles to earn the support of young and old alike across the world. Their victorious successes make the most inspirational stories that speak to what is possible through hard work, determination and commitment—concepts that are near and dear to the heart of every nonprofit.
We all can learn a great deal about Inspiration, Striving, and Passion from our Special Olympic athletes. There is no barrier separating them from working and living together with inspiration and passion.
These kids are my inspiration for living my life’s journey. These athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment — on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential.
If only we would watch and learn…
