Exercise for Boomers has gone trendy.
This is the generation that sent crib sales soaring in the 1950s and ’60s, snapped up cars in the 1980’s, and is now changing the fitness market in the same way it influenced music, fashion, and politics. Boomers have changed every market they have passed through, starting with baby food and diapers through education and right up to the automotive industry.
Now it’s fitness.
For many Boomers, staying active can make the difference in how old or young they look and feel. That is why millions of Boomers are enjoying SilverSneakers Fitness, at no additional cost, as the pathway to a healthy and active second-half of life. SilverSneakers Fitness is leading the way as the nation’s largest fitness and well-being program designed specifically with Boomers in mind.
The SilverSneakers program is offered at more than 13,000 fitness & wellness locations across the nation, with access to facility amenities, specialized classes and social events that Boomers can enjoy. And, for many it is provided through their Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement health plans and group retiree plans at no additional cost.
Gone are the days when seniors could only stroll around the park or do low-impact aerobics. Now, a slew of new gyms and exercise programs are catering exclusively to this trendy demographic.
Boomers are spurring travel agencies to offer hiking and kayaking trips just for seniors, which combine physical activity with luxuries such as gourmet food and comfortable tents. More active seniors even sparked the revival of Pickleball, the fastest growing sport I featured last week in The Boomer Explorer.
The fitness aspect to this blog has been very interesting journey for me personally. The SilverSneakers program now allows me to get a card at our local YMCA…which really wouldn’t make me jump for joy just because it’s free, but because they have regulation-size pickleball courts at our disposal. We are definitely getting ready for the next batch of Senior Olympic trials next year Representing Bristol Village.
SilverSneakers will knock your socks off with all levels of programs for Boomers. I, myself, will get back into shape with Volleyball…so look out Waverly, I am in the House! (You will also be able to catch me in the Village cross-country skiing, but I am going to have to talk to someone in charge of SNOW accumulation for the next season!)
So, what are your thoughts about following this fitness craze? Join the dialogue and let us know your what your fitness preference would be.
As always, I am…the pumped Boomer Explorer.
