When my new life journey was approaching liftoff, I remember feeling overwhelmed and stuck at the same time. To say I was a bit out of balance was an obvious understatement.
I ended my music entertainment company after the house sold, and dove right into organizing our upcoming liftoff to Ohio.
We had exactly 5 weeks to weed through items we were not taking with us, boxing what we were taking…all under the premise of downsizing.
Hopefully, you will at least see some the red flags attributed to being out of balance. Had I paid attention to my red flags, the initial journey might have been pleasant.
This leads me to give you a few ways to find balance in your life journey. Please note the following is just the beginning, but at least it is just that…a beginning:
- Fight Fear With Gratitude: What is gratitude? According to my Collins Paperback English Dictionary, the definition is, “a feeling of thankfulness”. I looked up “thankful” and it read “appreciation”. I looked up “appreciation” and it read “to value highly”. It is easy to feel grateful when everything is going well in your life. What about when things are not going well? When there are burdens, struggles, drama, it’s hard to feel grateful. Do we wait until life gets better again or can we start where we are, in the midst of problems and challenges? I learned that when our outside circumstances are not changing, it’s time to go inside. Change begins with me. And once you actually throw up your arms and surrender, you will find some wonderful things happening in your life.
- As You Grow Older, Work Harder: As Ted Danson remarked, “Age is a marker, but it’s not everything. What we’re capable of has a lot more to do with our determination, our creativity, and our passion than the number of candles on the cake. While you’re living your life, it really doesn’t mean that much unless you allow it to.” It seems to a number of people I’ve spoken to that when you’re getting older, you definitely hit hard and bump into ‘I’m diminishing,’ but that usually hits you when you’re in the middle of a so-called passage, not when you’ve actually landed into whatever the “new age” is for you. And even though we have to work harder at things like memorizing, working out, and completing tasks, listen hard: you are still in the game.
- Know What’s Important: This item is definitely different for all of us. With each aspect of our journey, do the right thing in the moment. Be happy, healthy, kind, and joyful. Share and the rest will take care of itself.
And, just to leave you with what I understand to be what the gifts of gratitude give to us; look for increased self-esteem, enthusiasm, happiness, joy, and peace.
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, let’s reflect on attaining balance in our lives. I like the idea of beginning with Gratitude. How about joining me?
